Neither of the two homilies found in this volume is included in the large edition of Bedjan. The first survives only in an Armenian version and centers around a rather unique lament of the Mother of Jesus who while standing next to the cross and her dying Son chides the archangels Gabriel and Michael for not having saved Him from such an ignominious death. The other, which survives only in a single Syriac manuscript, is a homily On Mary and Golgotha that according to tradition Jacob left incomplete at the time of his death. These two homilies appear to be the last two pieces of a long cycle of homilies that Jacob preached on the events of Good Friday.

Mathews Jr. has taught at The Catholic University of America, Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Seminary, University of Scranton, Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the Armenian Evangelical Seminary in Yerevan, and St. Nersess Armenian Seminary, among others. He now resides in rural Mansfield, Ct, where, when not translating Syriac and Armenian texts –mostly for Gorgias Press! – he hikes in the woods with his faithful companion Pino and does what he can to restore his 19th century colonial home.

The Wisdom of Isaac of Nineveh

From one of the most thought-provoking writers in the monastic tradition, this volume contains 153 short, contemplative sayings of St. Isaac of Nineveh (fl. 661-681 CE) in their original Syriac with facing English translation. St. Isaac was ordained bishop of Nineveh but resigned his post only five months later and became a monastic hermit in the mountains of southeastern Iraq. Homily 33 on the Sanctification of the Church

Narsai’s memra 33 is made of 12 by 12 syllables, and its title “On the Sanctification of the Church” suggests that it was written for the feast of the Dedication of the Church celebrated by the Church of the East to this day on the first of November. The memra names the Church of the Nations the Bride of the Bridegroom Christ. The Church had a pagan origin but Christ chose her to become his bride. He thus saved her through his suffering, cleansed her with baptism, prepared the bridal feast for her through the Eucharist, and crowned her victory over all the nations.
