Eduard Sachau (1845-1930), known for his editions of Syriac and Arabic texts and for collecting a large number of Syriac manuscripts for the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (which he also described in his two-vol. Verzeichniss der syrischen Handschriften, available from Gorgias Press), here gives an annotated German translation of the controversial Chronicle of Arbela, first published by A. Mingana in 1907, which gives sketches of 20 early bishops (104-511) of the city, including mention of martyrdoms under the Persians. Sachau's lengthy introduction discusses the author of the Chronicle, its chronology, the spread of Christianity around 224 CE, and the contents of the Chronicle. A map of the area in the third century is included, as is an index of proper names occurring in the Chronicle.
