Albert Socin (1844-1899) traveled widely in the middle east and published several works on inscriptions, Arabic, Neo-Aramaic, and Kurdish. This volume contains texts from various regions between Urmia and Mosul, a collection of 27 narratives (including proverbs and songs) that offer a wealth of cultural information. The introduction orients this publication to previous work in modern Aramaic dialects and gives information on the regions and people from whom the texts come. The original text is given in east Syriac script (with vowels) and facing transcription; the German translation, with explanatory notes, occupies the second half of the book. The book will be of interest to linguists, historians, and anthropologists.
