This volume, Kleyn’s dissertation from Leiden, contains the life of John, bishop of Tella, who died in 538 in Antioch, written by Elias of Dara, who flourished in the mid-sixth century, and so was a close contemporary of the events described in the book. Kleyn has edited the Syriac text based on two British Museum (now Library) manuscripts and supplied it with an introduction and Dutch translation. The Syriac text contains a critical apparatus and the translation is annotated. An index of persons, places, and things is given, as are 31 theses (Stellingen) based on Kleyn’s study. This volume will be of interest especially to students and scholars of west Syrian church history.
