Italian Syriac scholar Ignazio Guidi (1844-1935), in this long article first published in the Memorie della Classe di scienze morali, storiche e filologiche, presents an edition and thoroughly annotated Italian translation (followed by a few remarks, with fragments, on related material from menologia, etc.) of the Syriac “Letter on the Himyarite Martyrs,” written from Hirta in 524, which deals with the persecution of Christians in Nagran, from author and bishop, Simeon of Beth Arsham. Guidi’s introduction covers the letter’s previous history in scholarship, Simeon as the author, his life, and the historical background of the events mentioned in the text. Students and scholars of Christianity and its history in this region, as well as all readers concerned with Syriac literature, will welcome the reappearance of this study and edition.
