In these two volumes, Mingana offers the vocalized Syriac text of 47 metrical homilies (memre) and 10 dialogue poems (sogyatha) of Narsai, the “tongue of the east” and “lyre of the Spirit.” Identical prefaces in Latin and Syriac cover Narsai’s life and works, sources for his thought, his literary style (and meter), and manuscripts of his works. The Syriac text of the poems are given with numerous annotations (in Syriac). Narsai is one of the most important poets in Syriac literature—probably the most important in the Church of the East—and this edition of his work is an essential resource for any reader interested in Syriac literature and biblical exegesis in Syriac.
