During her time as professor in the United States and Turkey, Huri Islamoglu has pursued the goal of restoring Ottoman history to its rightful place in world history. In this collection of articles from the past two decades, this objective is clearly evident. For example, Islamoglu argues that rather than being a victim of the modern world, the Ottoman Empire was part of the greater project of modernity which began in the 16th century. As an economist by training, Islamoglu focuses on Ottoman economic development and rejects the traditionally-held view of non-European stagnation. This collection is divided into sections: a critical assessment of the classical models; a rejection of Ottoman uniqueness; and her studies of Ottoman modernity. Ottoman History as World History will be of interest to students of both Ottoman history and the economic history.
