Syriac speaking Christians were among the first groups of people to encounter Islam in its nascent form and experience the expansion of the Arab Empire in the seventh century. As such, they had a unique perspective into the development of Islam and its relationship with Christianity. In the present work, Sydney H. Griffith provides a basic overview of Syriac authors that addressed the issue of Islam in their writings. Griffith pays particular attention to the genre of “dialogue” literature that featured a debate between a Christian and a Muslim. Griffith also discusses the major themes that recur in this literature.
