One of the noted linguistic works of Gregory Bar-Hebraeus, his Grammar of the Syriac Language, is reprinted here in the original Syriac. Accompanying this historical reference work is a Latin translation by Ernestus Bertheau. Fully annotated in Latin, this grammatical treatise will be of considerable interest to students of the history of languages as well as to specialists in Syriac. Although it is foundational for understanding the language of ancient Syria, this historical grammar written by one of the most distinguished medieval leaders of Eastern Christianity has remained a volume extremely difficult to locate. Gorgias Press is reviving this treasure in its series of historical grammars.

Ernst Bertheau (1812-1888) was a German Orientalist and Exegete. After studying at the Universities of Berlin and Göttingen, he was appointed Professor at the latter institution. Known primarily for his exegetical work in the Hebrew Bible, he also held a strong interest in Syriac.
