In 1896-99 H. Gismondi published an Arabic text, with Latin translation, of the work on the Patriarchs of the Church of the East under the title Maris Amri et Slibae De Patriarchibus Nestorianorum Commentaria (also available from Gorgias Press). In this volume, after providing a thorough general introduction to the work and to Gismondi’s edition, the author goes chronologically through a number of the sections dealing with the earlier Patriarchs. The Arabic and Latin work edited by Gismondi is absolutely essential for for any historical study of the Church of the East, and Westphal’s annotations and explanations on the text add much to that work’s usefulness, especially for readers more comfortable with German than with Arabic or Latin.
